Questions about the liability Insurance
Peter,
A couple of quick questions for you here, let me set this up correctly. The kids and I came up to ride at Chipmunk this weekend (yes, I am a american). The host at the park was telling me that I had to have liability insurance on my bike in order to ride. So I have a couple of questions about that. I managed to bluff my way through it and go riding because I really didnt know and neither did he but I am interested in staying in compliance and not receiving a nice 400$ ticket.
Firstly, do I need insurance on my bike or do I need to be insured myself?
Second, is the insurance to ride the FSR's or is it to ride the trails?
Third, does my BCORMA trail pass come with any liability insurance or do I have to buy the platinum?
Fourth, if I buy the platinum are my children covered or do I need to buy one for each of them?
Thanks for your help on this, I am sure I am probably the only one that's not clear on this.

insurance while dirt biking in BC
Q: Firstly, do I need insurance on my bike or do I need to be insured myself?
To ride on Forest Service Roads, the operator needs to show proof/carry at least $200,000 liability insurance, and a valid drivers license. The driver's license doesn't neccesarily have to be of type, though some really tight COs have wanted to interpret it this way. BCORMA has pressed the Government on this, and a non-type drivers license is supposed to be valid. The law only states needing a driver's license, not of type.
Q: Second, is the insurance to ride the FSR's or is it to ride the trails?
Liability insurance is only required to ride on or cross Forest Service Roads, not other types of skid roads or trails. Whether a FSR is deactivated or not, insurance is still required under the law.
Q: Third, does my BCORMA trail pass come with any liability insurance or do I have to buy the platinum?
Only the BCORMA Platinum - Insured Trail Pass provides liability insurance. BCORMA provides this to holders of the PI pass at cost + a $5.00 administration charge as a service to riders. The PI insurance is only available to residents of BC at this time due to the underwriter's restrictions.
Q: Fourth, if I buy the platinum are my children covered or do I need to buy one for each of them?
Under the PI pass insurance program, the insurance is provided to only the single holder of the pass. For riders under 18 yrs old, the PI insurance provides $200,000 liability coverage as long as they are riding in a legal situation. So for a rider under 18, but without a driver's license, they can not legally be on a FSR and have coverage.
As a side note to this, BCORMA is working to get this restriction changed under the new ORV Framework being developed by the Province.
Any more questions, put them up on the forum, and Ken Anderson of Oasis Insurance and myself will answer them to the best of our knowledge.

Hi Peter, I am new to
Hi Peter,
I am new to dirtbiking and am wondering if the laws still state that we need insurance to ride. I have looked thru your website but have found that the Platinum Membership isn't up anymore. Does that mean that perhaps this has gone by the wayside?
thanks for your time.

need for insurance
Please go to our BCORMA Store to buy the Platinum-Insured Trail Pass. 2012 passes were available since the beginning of October. The programcontinues, with the insurer providing up to three more months coverage for the same price as last years insurance.
As to needing insurance, the Provincial law states that you need at least $200,000 liability insurance and a driver's license to ride on a Forest Service Road (FSR). Note that is not all forestry roads, just FSRs which are defined under the law and usually marked.
The other aspect of insurance is for personal coverage if something happens out there like a head-on.
